Mikki Reports on the Alpine School China Experience

Today I knew that I would too busy with the Utahloy Immersion programme and other student leader responsibilities. Groups 1a and 1b met with Chine students who became buddies for the day and we were told to stick with them throughout the day. We attended their mainstream classes and stayed with them through breaks and meals. I and a few others were with Year 8’s and that we had sport first. My buddy for the day was a young boy called Leo. He spoke very good English and was kind. We played fun games including volleyball, soccer and basketball. Their classes were very short and were spread out over the duration of 6 periods a day. I attended P.E, Science, Humanities, Silent reading, English and Chinese. Our day finished at 3:40pm. We had some free time before dinner which some of us spent with our borders, swimming, or in our dorms or the common room area. We have traditional Chinese/Korean food for dinner which everyone is enjoying and getting used to. Personally, I think the food is amazing. Rice is the main staple on the menu, with various meat dishes, salads and breads. I’ll definitely miss this food when I return to Australia.

My main goal at the start of the day was to make friends with our new buddies. So far into my China experience I have learnt a lot about the differences in food, climate/environment and schooling life. The kids are really well behaved in class and so organised before each class. My main goal for the rest of our time at Utahloy is to become friends with many more students and to hopefully pick up some mandarin, to become more organised and hopefully learn to write some Chinese characters. Today’s experiences were really incredible and we have so many exciting activities that will be unbelievable. Everyone has become a lot closer, and traveling together has sure made a difference. All the teachers need to be thanked for this experience and getting us to China. This experience is becoming more exciting each day and I think I speak for many others when I say I don’t want this experience to end.

School For Student Leadership

School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative offering a unique residential education experience for year nine students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions. There are four campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. The Alpine School Campus is located at Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps. Snowy River Campus is near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in east Gippsland. The third site is adjacent to Mount Noorat near Camperdown in Victoria’s Western District, and is called Gnurad-Gundidj. After consultation with the local aboriginal community, this name represents both the indigenous name of the local area and an interpretation of the statement "belonging to this place". Our fourth and newest campus, Don Valley Campus is located at Don Valley in the Yarra Ranges.
