Term 3 2010
Bridge Building 1A

Bridge Building 1aBridge building was possibly the best and most enjoyable activity I have done so far at the Alpine School.

In our expo groups we set out to a place where a small part of the Victoria River ran through. When we arrived we were greeted by the sound of running water and some cattle in the distance. Our main task when bridge building was to construct a bridge out of only logs and rope which would span across the width of the river.

Thinking & Learning - Which side of the brain do you use?

Today, two groups joined together to do a class called thinking and learning. You find out which side of your brain is more dominant, and how you think. But, as many of the teachers hastened to tell us, the results aren’t set in stone (which made quite a few people relieved!)

We used something called the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument to find out whether we were more Rational, Experimental, Safekeeping or Feeling. Basically, whether you are logical and like numbers, take risks and like surprises, are organised and always punctual, or are sensitive to others and emotional.

The results were, to say the least, interesting. Lots of people who thought they were left-brainers were in fact right, and vica versa. Personally, I thought I was very creative, but my results showed I’m a lot more rational than I myself credit for.

All in all, it was a fun class (or at least compared to the stuff I’d be doing at home!)

Team Work - Term 3 Team Building

Today at the Alpine School Campus we participated in a variety of team building/work activities ranging from structure making to fast, strategy requiring games.

The activities began with all of the students being split up into their school groups and meeting up with their liaison Teachers, where they introduced themselves to their liaison teacher and told them something about themselves. As the day progressed we participated in a lot more activities, the first of which for me was a trust game where we were put into our expo groups and we had to re-create a structure made from lollies and toothpicks, the catch was that we were told that some of our groups were players who would do anything to help us complete the structure and the rest were spies who would work against us.

School For Student Leadership

School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative offering a unique residential education experience for year nine students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions. There are four campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. The Alpine School Campus is located at Dinner Plain in the Victorian Alps. Snowy River Campus is near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in east Gippsland. The third site is adjacent to Mount Noorat near Camperdown in Victoria’s Western District, and is called Gnurad-Gundidj. After consultation with the local aboriginal community, this name represents both the indigenous name of the local area and an interpretation of the statement "belonging to this place". Our fourth and newest campus, Don Valley Campus is located at Don Valley in the Yarra Ranges.
