Student Teacher Practicum at The Alpine School

The Alpine School welcomes student teachers to participate in their teaching practicum. We have one place available per term and priority is given to the earliest expressions of interest. The school’s unique program, however, means that this teaching practicum is very different to that of a ‘normal school’. We operate on a seven day per weeks cycle, as students are in residence here all the time. A student teacher may be required to undertake their practicum on any day(s) of the week, and become immersed in classes and at times (including evenings) that may be very different to the methods and times that you are aspiring to teach.

Classes operate in blocks of half days as a minimum, and often for full days. There are no bells, and the pedagogical approach is significantly student-centred.

The dates that we believe are best for a teaching practicum at The Alpine School are during the first five weeks of our program. Throughout this time there are many opportunities to teach a variety of different aspects of our innovative program. Later on in the program the students become very self-directed and therefore there are not many teaching opportunities.

You will also need to find your own accommodation for the duration of the placement. Staff at The Alpine School are always willing to help find accommodation. The Alpine School is also classified as a remote placement so a grant is available for all student teachers to help with these costs. Any assistance needs to be pursued through the appropriate DE&T Recruitment Website, and prospective student teachers must contact the Alpine School to discuss these arrangements.

Due to the programs popularity we need to undertake a selection process in order to ensure that this practicum is appropriate for both the school and your needs. So if you believe that The Alpine School may be a suitable place to undertake your teaching practicum please peruse the website and then contact The Alpine School for more information.
