1. Selection of student teams at a school level is the first step for schools to undertake. The decision to apply and participate is a local-level, school decision.

It is strongly recommended that the following process be adopted:

  • Schools should involve students and their communities in the decision whether to apply at the very first instance.
  • Students should trawl through the Alpine School website to gain as much information as possible. This can be integrated into existing curriculum at the school.
  • Students should be encouraged to contact the Alpine School and talk to or email students currently in attendance at the Alpine School to gain greater insight into the program.
  • Whole school belief should be adopted in the value and benefit of a team undertaking an Alpine School Experience and support of them.
  • Schools nominate or invite nominations for the role of Alpine School Liaison Teacher.

The following tasks are detailed below:

  • Schools inform Year 9 students and families. Interested families are then invited to attend an information session. The Alpine School Promotional Video is also available and provides a valuable resource. Schools may also consider inviting local past students from Alpine School Programs.
  • Interested students undertake a merit-based selection process, devised with student involvement, which is appropriate for the school context.
  • Male and female successful applicants are separately priority ranked by merit based selection. Students are made aware of their ranking.
  • Until schools are notified of the FINAL selection from Regional Office, students' inclusion in either the team or program is NOT CONFIRMED. Student's involvement in the Community Learning Project IS confirmed at a school Level.
  • Interested students develop a Community Learning Project (CLP)with assistance provided by the designated Liaison Teacher.
  • Students develop their application and seek community sponsorship.
  • Applications submitted.
  • If successful, school and families invited to Alpine School Community Information session prior to departure.
  • Schools instigate management of dissapointment process if unsuccessful.
